Through performance and composition Troia aims to explore the musical heritage of the eastern Mediterranean, in particular the connections that exist or may once have existed between the traditions involved. The group has performed throughout the UK and abroad, and has most recently contributed to the BBC Turkish World Service series Iki Kere Yabancı

Troia means ‘New Troy’, and the name comes from a myth ascribing the foundation of London to refugees from the war of Troy. The group celebrates the kaleidoscope of East, West, old and new that is contemporary London, and its aim is to give expression to this world through the modern application of traditional music.

The Ensemble uses traditional acoustic instruments and vocal techniques from Greece, Turkey and the Middle East. The group’s repertoire consists of original compositions and readings of traditional folk and classical pieces.

Troia's line up is constantly evolving. At present it consists of singers Fotini Diamantidaki and Özlem Esen Hooper, ney player Yasin Önemli, kemençe player Eleni Kallimopoulou and percussionists Samaresh Mukerji (tabla) and Guy Schalom (darabuka). Chris Williams playe ud, lafta, saz, Cretan lyra and tanbur.
