James took to music at the age of 9, playing the oboe. He then took up the sax at the age of 12 and has played saxophones, flute and clarinet and oboe professionally since 1998 in many diverse projects ranging from Jazz, Pop and Soul to pitt and classical orchestras. Initially taught by saxophonist Don Rendell, James then went on to Oxford University and studied with Jazz Messenger Jean Toussaint. He then attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama for his Masters where he studied and performed with Tim Garland and in 2004 he won the Archer Jazz Scholarship at Trinity College of Music. James has played at many well-known London venues including Ronnie Scott's, the Vortex, the Spice of Life and Pizza-on-the-Park as leader and side-man. In 2003-5 he played Lead Tenor with The National Youth Jazz Orchestra, and recently this year toured France with the Glen Miller Orchestra. His show experience includes Return to the Forbidden Planet, West Side Story and Me and My Girl and he works as a soloist with singers Ruth Hamilton and Sarah Mitra. James has played in some of London's top Soul Bands, recorded live on BBC Radio and TV and co-leads his jazz quartet, A to Z, playing original arrangements and compositions. The band toured Italy and Switzerland in 2005 and has played in Berlin in 2006 and is performing at this year's London Jazz Festival. |
