Armin
Zanner was born in Glasgow and completed an MPhil in Musicology
at Selwyn College, Cambridge in 2001. Since then he has studied singing
with Penelope Mackay then with Rudolf Piernay at London’s Guildhall
School of Music and Drama.
Armin created the role of Philippus in
Ita Vivam, a new opera by Christina Athinodorou, at Guildhall. Other
operatic roles include Dorilas in Charpentier's 'Le Malade Imaginaire'
Prologue with the Guildhall School of Music, and Matt in the ENO/Baylis
production of Kurt Weill’s Threepenny Opera. He appeared as soloist
in Brahms’ German Requiem in London, Haydn’s Creation in Wolverhampton
and in Bach’s St John Passion in Rome and Umbria, as well as singing
Bach’s B Minor Mass under Richard Egarr at Snape Maltings as a member
of the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme in 2003.
More recently Armin performed the role
of Don Carlos in L’Europe Galante by Campra under William Christie
at the Ambronay Festival and on tour in Spain and France. He has appeared
as soloist in oratorio and recital throughout the UK including the
British Embassy in The Hague and St John’s, Smith Square, London,
with Graham Johnson’s Young Songmakers. He is also currently a member
of the Live Music Now! scheme for young musicians and in addition
to classical repertoire has a particular interest in performing music-theatre
and cabaret-style songs.
